Mona Eltahawy – Do Arab men hate women?

Mona Eltahawy’s article in Foreign Policy Magazine from 2012 ‘Why do they hate us?’ has been extremely controversial, especially considering the us vs. them binary of women vs. men which excludes men from wanting equality for women.

Two days ago the Al Jazeera news forum ‘Head to Head’ hosted by Mehdi Hasan takes on the debate with Mona Eltahawy and a panel consisting of Dr Aitemad Muhanna of the London School of Economics’ Middle East Centre; self-proclaimed progressive Imam Dr Taj Hargey; and Dr Shuruq Naguib, a British-Egyptian academic from Lancaster University. Mona Eltahaway takes an extreme stance and one might find it difficult to agree with all of her points, but the fact remains that women are facing double-standards, sexism, inequalities and that they are taught to know their place (as women in other places than the Middle East as well as showed in this video).

Although the audience in the debate is critical towards Mona Eltahawy’s standpoints and means she is using to further her agenda, the audience overwhelmingly agrees that the situation for women in the Middle East is bad.
