In my last week in Birzeit, our neighbor was assassinated by Israeli forces in his home.
I never expected to run into Israeli army in Birzeit, it had seemed like such a quiet town. But I found myself standing right in front of 3 soldiers on my walk to the University. They shot their guns in the air and tear gassed us…we were just confused students on the way to class and a few shop keepers.
We were in Area A, supposedly illegal for Israeli citizens to be in, the red signs are posted all over the entries into the West Bank: “You are entering Area A under the Palestinian authority, entry is dangerous to your lives and illegal for Israeli citizens”.
